Notes from the Set is all about celebrating interiors through storytelling and collaboration with the incredible designers who shape our industry. Today, I’m spotlighting Christine van der Kieft of van der Kieft Designs, the designer behind this month’s featured project.

What was your design vision for this project?

Reworking the living room design was the primary focus of this project. We knocked down the wall on the second floor and designed a glass walkway with custom hidden bookcase doors on either side. The overall goal was to let in light from the front of the house and create a point of interest. Attaching the glass safely to the wall with minimal hardware was really important in keeping things clean.

We also needed to streamline and update the millwork surrounding the fireplace. We raised the height of the built-ins, added thicker shelving as well as the center divider, and, of course, that gorgeous Phillip Jeffries wallpaper. We also reworked the mantel and paneling above the fireplace to keep things in proportion with the fantastic ceiling height.

A BIT ABOUT CHRISTINE

Go-to design choice?

I try to strike a balance between intentionality and emotion. I want the elements in any particular room and throughout the home to feel purposeful and functional for how the client lives. Details and the flow of the spaces are key. The vantage point from one room into another is important. In terms of emotion, I try to create a space that will feel comforting and inspirational throughout all of our New England months. I always ask a client, “How will this make you feel in July? What about December?” I want to ensure that palettes are not driven by the moment but that they feel great all year long.

What is your favorite indulgence?

Family travel (I know that might sound painful, but it’s true! 😂)

Last book you read?

“The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau” by Kristin Harmel (LOVED it!!)

Your style in five words or less.

Classic, timeless, colorful, and purposeful.

Thanks Christine.

xx, Jess
