The Art of Photo Styling: And Why it’s so Important to Your Shoot

I get a lot of questions from clients about styling and whether they should hire a stylist for a scheduled shoot. And there are several factors involved in making the decision to hire a stylist: timing, budget, and an understanding of the value a stylist can bring to the final image. 

So here’s my take on styling and how it can bring out the best in all the work that’s gone into a project. 

Styling is the unsung hero of every great interiors photo. It’s the final, artful layer, the intentional placement of everyday items that brings your project to life and tells the story of the people who live there and the spaces they live in. The design sets the stage, but through the use of accessories and the placement of things like furniture and art, styling gives it warmth, texture, and authenticity. In a nutshell, styling confirms the intention of the design and helps move your eye through a photograph of the space.

After working on a project’s design for so long, it can be challenging to make sense of all the details that go into a single shot. That’s where a stylist comes in, adding a fresh set of eyes to a project with the goal of bringing out the best version of your work.  What looks beautiful in person doesn’t always translate on camera, and a good stylist knows how to bridge that gap. The right stylist for your project really depends on the look you are aiming for and where you hope the images will be showcased. Are you hoping to get your project published? Then you may want to work with a stylist who collaborates with specific publications and understands what editors are looking for. Yes, they might cost as much as your photographer. But in my mind, it's worth it. I've had the privilege of working with so many super-talented stylists in the industry and am always in awe of the work they do.
